Kam Kee Cafe in Yuen Long Plaza offers a straightforward encounter with Hong Kong’s beloved cha chaan teng culture, tucked away on the second floor of a busy shopping complex along Castle Peak Road. It’s the kind of spot locals swing by for an affordable, no-frills meal that covers the familiar bases of Hong Kong-style café fare with a few standout dishes.

The atmosphere here feels practical and functional rather than polished—expect a bustling crowd during peak hours, including nearby office workers, students, and residents looking for a quick and hearty meal. The ordering system leans into convenience with mobile phone ordering, which is helpful for those who prefer to skip queues or aren’t fluent in Cantonese, as English options are available.

On the menu, Kam Kee sticks closely to cha chaan teng staples. You’ll find classics like poached chicken sets, fatty steak, grilled chicken chop, and baked pork chop rice with that distinctive Hong Kong “yinyang” sauce blend. The variety caters mostly to meat eaters, with very limited choices for vegetarians, so those looking for more plant-based options might want to temper expectations. Drinks like the well-regarded iced milk tea are a reliable accompaniment to the mains.

Food arrives quickly, making it a sensible stop for a no-nonsense lunch or early dinner. The rice dishes are a mixed experience—some note the texture can be soggy, a reminder that this is everyday fare with its imperfections, rather than elevated dining. Staff tend to be friendly but the service can slow down when the crowd picks up, a familiar choreography in places that rely heavily on volume.

Ideal visits are during off-peak hours, when the rush subsides and you can take in a slice of everyday local dining without jostling. Kam Kee suits anyone looking for a straightforward taste of Hong Kong’s casual café scene, especially those with a passing knowledge of local comfort food and a desire for quick, familiar flavors without fuss.

Great ‘Hong Kong style cafe’ and does as expected. Food was good for the price and very quick. You order by mobile phone so it was super convenient and had English. Breakfast for two cost $75.
